Nevertheless, without further ado, let’s kickstart this guide by answering the question, ”What is Starknet?”.

What is Starknet?

Ethereum is the biggest blockchain for building decentralized applications (dapps), and the network has been growing rapidly over the past few years. This notable surge in adoption is, without a doubt, positive; however, it has additionally underscored the issues Ethereum faces in terms of scalability. Fortunately, this is where blockchain networks like Starknet enter the equation!

But what exactly is Starknet?

Starknet launched in 2022, and it’s a permissionless, decentralized layer-2 (L2) scaling solution for the Ethereum network. And since Starknet is layered on top of Ethereum, the blockchain is able to facilitate transactions with lower gas fees and faster processing times, all without compromising the security and composability of the base network!

So, how is this possible?

In short, Starknet leverages the power of zero-knowledge rollups (zk-rollups) technology to bundle thousands of transactions on the network into ”proofs”, which are then submitted to Ethereum as transactions. This significantly reduces the load put on Ethereum, resulting in improved throughput and lower transaction costs.

Now, with a brief overview of what Starknet is, let’s take the following subsection to explore some prominent benefits of this network!

Benefits of Starknet

Being an ETH layer-2 scaling solution, Starknet provides a bunch of advantages, and in this section, we’ll look at four prominent examples:

  • Higher Throughput: Starknet’s zk-rollups technology allows the network to process hundreds of transactions each second, which is significantly higher than Ethereum.
  • Lower Fees: Starknet drastically reduces transaction fees compared to Ethereum, making it more accessible to a wider range of applications and a broader user base.
  • Security: Starknet leverages and maintains the security of Ethereum, ensuring that applications and users remain protected.
  • Developer Friendly: Developers can use the familiar syntax and structure of the Cairo programming language, making it more accessible to learn and build Starknet-compatible applications.

Nevertheless, that gives you a few benefits of Starknet. In the next section, we’ll introduce you to Cairo a bit more!

What is Cairo?

Cairo is the native programming language of Starknet, and it’s specially designed for creating STARK-provable programs for general computations. This enables one party to prove to another – via ”proofs” – that a specific computation was executed correctly, which is an efficient method for improving the scalability of blockchain networks. Moreover, Cairo is Rust-inspired, allowing developers to write and develop Starknet smart contracts in a convenient, familiar, and safe manner.

Now, with an overview of what Starknet is, let’s dive into the intricacies of Starknet faucets!

What is a Starknet Faucet?

Even though Starknet features low gas fees and fast transaction times, it’s always recommended to leverage a testnet when building Web3 projects. But what exactly is a Starknet testnet? A Starknet testnet is a complete replica of the main network, serving as a safe and secure environment for testing dapps. However, one major difference is that you can use a Starknet faucet to get free tokens for these networks!

Starknet faucets are websites or applications distributing a small amount of testnet tokens that can be used to pay for transactions on the network. These platforms typically feature straightforward and intuitive user interfaces (UIs) where you simply input a wallet address, click a button, and get tokens in return. For instance, this is an example of what a Starknet faucet might look like:

All in all, a Starknet faucet is a tool that allows you to get free testnet tokens at the click of a few buttons!

However, from a conventional perspective, it has been quite challenging to find legitimate and straightforward faucets that don’t require personal information, tweet verifications, etc. Fortunately, this is precisely why we built Moralis’ crypto faucets page!
